Heritage Oud-Poelgeest in the Leidsch Dagblad

We are proud to share that Kasteel Oud-Poelgeest recently shone in an extensive article in the Leidsch Dagblad. The article highlighted the 300th anniversary of Herman Boerhaave's purchase of Oud Poelgeest in 1724 and the special festivities surrounding this historic moment.

Why this celebration?Herman Boerhaave is known as one of the most important scientists of his time. With the purchase of Oud-Poelgeest he created a place where science, nature and culture went hand in hand. He transformed the estate, especially the garden, into an arboretum, inspired by his passion for botany. The celebration was intended to reflect on this rich history and to put Boerhaave's legacy back in the spotlight.

During the celebration, eight descendants of the famous Leiden professor gathered at the estate. Among them was Nancy Elias Witsen-Kool, a distant descendant of Boerhaave, who proudly carried a bust of her illustrious ancestor to the coach house. The article also described Boerhaave's vision for the estate, with his focus on the construction of an arboretum and his use of the Haarlemmertrekvaart for transport and trade.

The celebration was a tribute to the rich past, but also a moment to look forward. Oud-Poelgeest remains an important location where history, culture and nature come together.
